Our City

Its Government - Newburyport has a Mayor and City Council form of municipal government. Every two years the Mayor and eleven City Councillors are elected to office. There are six wards in the City and they are each represented by one City Councillor. There are five Councillors-at-Large representing all wards.

The Council meets on the second and last Monday of each month at 7:30 pm in Council Chambers. The local access channel carries the meetings live and replays the tape during the week.

Its History - Newburyport is a city that is very interested in and proud of its history.

The Caleb Cushing House Museum, located at 98 High Street, houses the collection of the Historical Society of Old Newbury. The society dates back to 1877 and was organized for the purpose of the study and remembrance of Newbury's history which includes, Newbury, Newburyport, West Newbury, Byfield and Plum Island.

The Custom House Maritime Musuem, located at 25 Water Street, has a unique collection of maritime art, model clipper ships, displays of famous shipwrecks, the history of the Coast Guard, and more.

Its Culture - Newburyport has a diverse and dynamic culture.
Artistically, it has a vibrant music and art community. There are a number of galleries showing paintings and sculpture of all styles. The Chamber of Commerce is an important source of information on art events.

Theatrically, it has the impressive Firehouse Center for the Arts. with the intimate 195 seat Arakalian Theatre. The Center presents dance, concerts, drama, musicals, film, new works and children's programming
